Things to do in Boats
In no particular order
(well, actually it's alphabetical)
Below is a summary of the disciplines in
which the club largely participates.
Playboating
This hugely popular pursuit is largely populated by large men in
small boats, adopting unconventional angles, vertically, in the
air, and round and round in little circles. Usually taking place
in a weir, hole or wave, throw as many moves as you can and impress
the spectators. Guaranteed to get you soaked, it's basically about
having fun, but there are competitions where judges will decide
who has had the most fun, and the most skilfully, and award points
accordingly.
Polo
Warning: polo is violent and may lead to serious bruising. Wear
a silly hat with a faceguard and a bright yellow buoyancy aid, and
beat the crap out of each other with a paddle. The cause of all
this violence is a small yellow ball, which you and your team will
be trying to place in your opponents goal. We play this most weeks
at the pool and compete at the annual BUSA competition. In Doncaster.
Who said canoeing isn't glamourous?
Slalom
Picture the scene. The river is strewn with poles hanging from bits
of string. Some are red, some are green and you have to paddle a
certain direction through them as fast as you can. If you do it
fastest you get a pretty medal and a BCU ranking. It's fun, it's
exciting, people will cheer you on from the bank and you get to
go to all sorts of interesting pubs.
Surf
Did you know that you can do most of the things you can do on a
surf board in a kayak, and somethings that you can't? Well you can,
and it's great fun. UK surf is up all year round in Cornwall and
Wales so there's no excuse.
Whitewater river running
Bomb your way down a rapid without dieing. Very exhilarating and
mentally challenging, this takes quite a bit of training but it's
worth it. We run trips all year to various areas of the British
countryside, and regularly visit the artificial WW courses in Northampton
and Nottingham. If you think you're pretty quick at it, you can
compete in wild water races, there is even a BUSA one.
Other things
In the past members of the club has also enjoyed/endured other areas
of boating, including:
Whitewater Safety and Rescue
Open Canoeing
Sea Kayaking (in whitewater boats, oops)
Aquatic First Aid
